COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team led all Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference programs with 20 wrestlers on the RMAC All-Academic Team that was released on Thursday (Mar. 27) morning.
The 10-member first team was selected by a vote of institutional athletic communications directors, based on a combination of athletic and academic accomplishments. To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have a 3.50 or higher cumulative GPA, have completed two consecutive semesters at their current institution and have used a season of competition.
To be named to the Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a 3.30 or higher GPA and meet the other requirements.
Out of the Mavericks 20 All-Academic team selections, six of those earned First Team honors which also led the conference.
Sophomore
Dayson Torgerson picked up his first RMAC All-Academic First Team nod after earning a 3.60 GPA in Civil Engineering classes. The Aurora, Utah native finished the season with a 23-8 record and wrestled his way to All-American honors at the NCAA Championships at 125 pounds by placing seventh.
Redshirt sophomore
Owen Cline was a first team selection this season after garnering honor roll recognition last season. Cline, a Business Administration major with a 3.50 GPA, earned All-American honors after a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships at 157 pounds. The Orting, Wash. native finished the season with a 16-5 record and is now 33-16 in his career.
Redshirt junior
Gus Dalton was named to the RMAC All-Academic Team for the third time in his career. Dalton, a Business Administration major with a 3.73 GPA, made a return trip to the NCAA National Championship but came up just shy of becoming an All-American at 174 pounds. The Emery, Utah native finished the season with a 12-13 record and is 60-37 in his career.
Denim Torgerson earned his second straight RMAC All-Academic First Team honor after working for a 3.73 GPA in Exercise Science coursework. The redshirt junior finished the season with a 12-10 record and placed fifth at the NCAA Super Region VI tournament.
Oran Huff earned his second straight RMAC All-Academic First Team honor by working for a 3.74 GPA in Secondary Education. Huff finished the season with a 14-12 record and is now 56-33 in his Colorado Mesa career.
Redshirt freshman
Keyton Young is the Mavericks final RMAC All-Academic First Team recipient as he earned the honor for the first time he is eligible for the award. Young, a 4.0 Computer Information Systems student, filled in for the Mavericks at 149 pounds when injuries struck and finished the season with an 11-5 record and 2-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals.
Colorado School of Mines' Grayston DiBlasi was named the RMAC Academic Wrestler of the Year after earning a 3.96 GPA in Mechanical Engineering coursework.
