Phillip Kovacs joined the staff at the beginning of July and takes over from Bob Tucker, who retired in April.

Kovacs has worked in Portland, Oregon and Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and says he’s a good fit for Kodiak.

“Two weeks of rain – doesn’t bother me. Twenty-five percent of the day is daylight – doesn’t bother me.”

That’s partly because he spends a lot of his spare time inside organizing a radio show featuring electronic dance music, or EDM. That’s a genre Kovacs is really into.

“I’ve got a vast collection. I’ve been collecting for 40 years.”

Kovacs has been airing some his favorites on KMXT Public Radio. He’s been volunteering with community radio for many years, and signed up to host an EDM-themed slot with the station soon after moving to Kodiak.

“I guess I’ve always had a passion to be a DJ, but not having that chance or the opportunity, the second best thing is to be a DJ on a radio [station] and spin this type of music.”

He says he finds EDM energizing: perfect for a car ride, and maybe less perfect for the workplace. He says it’s a little distracting to be his background music of choice in the borough building.

As director of the Engineering and Facilities Department, Kovacs will handle renovation, renewal, and replacement of borough infrastructure and oversee capital projects, among his other duties.
